Ever since she sat next to me in class and gave me death eyes, Willa Sutter’s been on my shit list. Why she hates me, I don’t know. What I do know is that Willa is the kind of chaos I don’t need in my tidy life. She’s the next generation of women’s soccer. Wild hair, wilder eyes. Bee-stung lips that should be illegal. And a temper that makes the devil seem friendly.
She’s a thorn in my side, a menacing, cantankerous, pain-in-the-ass who’s turned our Business Mathematics course into a goddamn gladiator arena. I’ll leave this war zone unscathed, coming out on top…And if I have my way with that crazy-haired, ball-busting hellion, that will be in more than one sense of the word.
Rather than give me the lecture notes I missed like every other instructor I’ve had, my asshole professor tells me to get them from the silent, surly flannel-wearing mountain man sitting next to me in class. Well, I tried. And what did I get from Ryder Bergman? Ignored. What a complete lumbersexual neanderthal. Mangy beard and mangier hair. Frayed ball cap that hides his eyes. And a stubborn refusal to acknowledge my existence.
I’ve battled men before, but with Ryder, it’s war. I’ll get those notes and crack that Sasquatch nut if it’s the last thing I do, then I’ll have him at my mercy. Victory will have never tasted so sweet.Synopsis courtesy of Goodreads
Instead of counting the books I read in 2021, I’m tempted to track the number of sleep hours lost instead. I started this book on the commute to work, read at lunch, again on the commute home… next thing I know it’s 2am and I’m no longer sure what day of the week it is. My caffeine intake was four time the usual amount today, but I’m starting to feel somewhat human again. I wish I could say this was the last time I would do this, but that would be a bold face lie.
This book was sooo satisfying! I had all the feels and didn’t want it to end. I randomly snorted in laughter (attractive I know) so many times on the bus.. I may have scared my fellow commuters.
‘Only when it’s us’ is book 1 in the Bergman Brother’s series. The third book in this series just recently came out. It follows a different member of the Bergman kids- 7 in all so I’m sure we’ll get to see these characters again!
This is a slow burns enemies to friends to lovers. We follow Ryder and Willa as they get pushed together by a meddling professor. Ryder is dealing with the fairly recent loss of his hearing and Willa is forced to watch her beloved mama fight cancer. Misunderstandings abound as their feelings for each other grow warmer.
I couldn’t get enough of how these two were constantly at each other’s throat while simultaneously taking care of each other. It was never vicious annoyance, more of a friendly teasing à la schoolyard flirting. So Good!!
I don’t know if I’ve ever read a romance with deaf representation. There needs to be more of this. Both male and female- we are not all built the same or have the same abilities! I really want to make a conscious effort to diversify my reading even more this year. If you guys have any suggestions of books or authors I should check out, please leave a comment below.
Parts of this was hard to read- if loss of a loved one is triggering for you, tread lightly with this one- but I already want to re-read this one.
Have you read Only When It’s Us? What were your thoughts?
